C.1900-1925. An early 20th century antique French filigree sautoir chain. The chain is composed of openwork filigree medallions interspaced with tear-shaped links and lemniscate ties. Crafted in 18k gold, the chain bears a French assay mark. 
Chains ranging from opera length (26-36 inches) to 60-inch sautoirs remained popular for about three decades, from the Belle Époque (1871 - 1914) and Edwardian periods to well into the Deco era (1920 - 1935). A filigree medallion-type sautoir like this chain is distinctively French, originating from the 1870s. These openwork French sautoirs continued to be made until c.1930, though some later versions feature cruder workmanship and connecting sections of simple rolo/curb links with less intricate work.
This chain weighs 30.5 grams, and measures approximately 26 inches with 12.6mm width at the widest part. We've always loved good opera length chains because they are easy to wear and complimentary to style with other pieces. This chain looks striking when worn, with its large scale of the links. Wear it on its own as a single chain necklace, or it effortlessly goes well with other chains as well. Overall this chain is in very good condition.
